Maradona skips film premiere, heads to Buenos Aires for operation on shoulder

Footballing legend expresses support for 'Fernández-Fernández' presidential ticket as he arrives back in homeland.

Local footballing superhero Diego Maradona arrived in the capital on Tuesday night, where he will undergo treatment for a shoulder injury.

"Already in Buenos Aires, on my way home," read a message on social media penned by the Argentine legend, who is currently employed as the coach of Mexican side Dorados de Sinaloa.

Maradona also took the opportunity to dip into politics, expressing his support for the presidential candidacy of the Peronist leader Alberto Fernández, who it was announced last weekend will head a ticket seconded by former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The former president would be elected as vice-president in October, should Fernández win the election.

"Very happy with the news that Alberto Fernández will be our new president, thanks to GREAT Cristina, Greetings to all!"

Maradona, 58, declined an invitation to visit the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of a new documentary about his life last Sunday.

"He hurt his shoulder and apparently he will have to undergo surgery," the film's British director, Asif Kapadia, told AFP.

Maradona previously underwent an operation on his left shoulder in March 2017 in Dubai, while he was managing second division side Al Fujairah.

According to reports in the local press, Maradona will stay in Buenos Aires for the next 10 days, before returning to Mexico, where is likely to be offered a new contract with Dorados.
