Cecchinato sees off Schwartzman to clinch Argentina Open title

Home crowd favourite Diego Schwartzman defeated by Italian third seed in final of ATP event in Buenos Aires.

Third-seeded Marco Cecchinato of Italy won the Argentina Open final on Sunday, taking his third career title and disappointing home crowd favorite Diego Schwartzman.

The 26-year-old Cecchinato easily beat fourth-seeded Schwartzman 6-1, 6-2 on the outdoor clay, ending fans' hopes a local lad might win the title.

Schwartzman had saved a match point to come back and knock out defending champion Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals.

But on Sunday it was very different, with Cecchinato barely giving Schwartzman a chance from the beginning in a clinical performance. At one point, the Argentine went of a losing run of seven games in a row.

Cecchinato, ranked 18 worldwide by ATP, took little over an hour to claim his third ATP title, following on from 2018 victories in Budapest and Umag. He did not lose a set all week.

The 26-year-old, who famously defeated Novak Djokovic on his way to the French Open semi-finals last year, has won all three of his titles on clay.
