Bolivia's interim president says she won't attend Mercosur summit

Bolivia is in the process of joining the regional bloc, made up of Argentina, Brazil Paraguay and Uruguay as full members.

Interim Bolivian President Jeanine Áñez will not participate in the Mercosur summit next week in Brazil.

The announcement came from the Foreign Minister Karen Longaric, at the end of last week. Longaric will attend in the place of the president.

"I will go as Chancellor," she said, though she didn't give any reasons why Áñez won't attend despite being invited personally by the government of Jair Bolsonaro.

The biannual meeting will start Tuesday in Bento Gonçalves, with meetings between experts and then chancellors. National leaders will meet Thursday December 5.

Bolivia is in the process of joining the regional bloc, made up of Argentina, Brazil Paraguay and Uruguay as full members.

Longiarc said to AFP that the bilateral relationship with Brazil "was losing value" during the administration of Morales, due to his ideological differences with Bolsonaro.

Still, "it's in the interest of Bolivia to stretch the ties and activate international cooperation," she said.
