A 45-year-old woman and her four-year-old son were attacked on Thursday by two men while walking near the beach in the Santa Cruz town, Puerto Deseado. The woman was sexually abused and her son was killed.
The mother, originally from Salta, and the boy were in the Patagonia province to visit her eldest son. They were walking along the beach when two people attacked them and threw stones at them. One of the men sexually abused the woman, while the other killed the boy and threw him from a cliff.
The survivor was admitted to the Hospital Distrital with bruises and head trauma.
Today, neighbors will participate in a march, starting at the local police station and going to the Court of Instruction.
This attack comes during a wave of crime throughout the country.
On Tuesday, thousands rallied outside Congress to demand justice for Fernando Baéz Sosa, the 18-year-old who was beaten to death in Villa Gesell last month. Baéz Sosa was fatally beaten by a group of young rugby players outside a nightclub. Protesters have called for a trial to take place as soon as possible, demanding that the killers be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, murder rates in Rosario have called national interest. Wednesday, a 35-year-old man was shot inside his car in Villa Gobernador Gálvez. This was the 40th murder recorded in by the Rosario police department so far this year.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office presented a preliminary report in January, which highlighted that 337 victims of homicide were recorded in the province in 2019. Within the region, 80 percent of homicides were concentrated in Rosario and Sante Fe.
Argentina recorded a rate of 5.3 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2018, the latest official figure reported by the national criminal information system (SNIC). Although it is low for the region, acts of violence within the country have been on the rise.
