Fernández de Kirchner requests to travel to Cuba for fourth time

Former president asks to be excused from part of her corruption trial hearings regarding alleged fraud in public works projects.

Former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has requested permission from the courts to travel to Cuba where her daughter, Florencia, is undergoing medical treatment.

The request of Frente de Todos vice-presidential candidate is to leave Argentina for a trip between August 22 and 30, after the PASO primary vote this coming Sunday.

The request, presented by her lawyer before Federal Oral Tribunal Number 2, was made just before the courts take winter judicial leave, judicial sources confirmed to Perfil.

The former president’s defence team cited personal reasons for a would be a temporary absence from court proceedings covering oral arguments in her corruption case for alleged fraud in public works projects.

Lawyer Carlos Beraldi, representing Fernández de Kirchner, said she asked to travel for what would be the fourth time to Cuba in recent months. A decision will be made by judges who on Monday resumed a previous opinion trial of prosecutor Diego Luciani, who rejected the defense’s proposal to suspend the hearings.

The defense has made more than fifty such suspension requests throughout the trial.

The former president is legally ensnared by accusations of fraud in public works projects due to irregularities committed during bidding for contracts that ultimately went to businessman Lázaro Báez. A total of 51 are being assessed by a body of experts for the Supreme Court.

Fernández de Kirchner’s daughter, Florencia, has resided in Cuba since the beginning of 2019, arriving there for medical treatment with authorisation from the Federal Oral Tribunal Number 5, which is investigating alleged money-laundering charges.
